The Poltava University of Economics and Trade is the leading higher educational institution in Ukraine, founded in 1974. TUniversity prepares specialists of the highest qualification in economics and banking for more than 45 years by now. 

In 2000, according to the decision of the State Accreditation Commission of the Ministry of education and science of Ukraine from July 11, 2000, Poltava Cooperative Institute was certified according to the results of the certification examination of the State Inspectorate of educational institutions. The licensed volume of recruitment for full-time study in the 2000-2001 academic year amounted to 575 people, retraining 150 people.

In 2003, the new specialties “Economic Cybernetics”, “Banking”, and “Social computing” were opened, and in 2006 – “Personnel management and labor economics”, 2007– “Hotels and restaurants management”.The number of scientific and pedagogical staff has raised to 577 people, 66 professors, and 356 senior lecturers. In 2009, the University again got accreditation with the decision of the State Accreditation Commission of the Ministry of education and science of Ukraine from July 2, 2009, it was awarded the highest fourth level of accreditation.
