Latvia University of Science and Technology was established as the Agricultural Department at the Riga Polytechnical Institute in 1863. It became an independent institution in 1939 and was renamed Latvia University of Science and Technology in 2018. University provides multiform unique study programs related to advanced agriculture, veterinary medicine, food production, forestry, and landscape architecture. The university is located in Jelgava – an old cultural city that is only 40 km from the capital of Latvia – Riga.

Latvia University of Science and Technology is one of the most popular study destinations in Latvia with more than 7,000 international and national students. Foreign applicants are not excluded from the admission process. More than 1,500 high-qualified and prominent teachers and foreign specialists are employed by the university and invited for public lectures or conferences. 

Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) offers a wide range of study programs at Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral levels for international students in English medium of instruction.

Research Units 

 

Latvia University of Science and Technology is an active member of state research projects and agreements in the field of biotechnology, life sciences, engineering science,s and social sciences. LBTU’s research specialization is based on its vision, evaluating the university’s scientific competence regarding the development challenges of Latvia, the Baltic Sea region, and the European Union, as well as global challenges.

The scientific competence of the university grasps the areas that are related to the sustainable use of natural resources. After establishing the fields of the university’s research specialization, the topicality of each chosen option was assessed concerning the aspect of the society’s quality of life in the present and the future, the needs of the national economy, and the applicability of the expected results.

LBTU Research Laboratory of Biotechnology is a basic research unit under the supervision of the LBTU Vice-Rector for Science, who performs testing orders, concludes, maintains, and maintains the State of the Animal Genetic Resources of Latvia, as well as performs scientific research in one of its subbranches.
